Summer is probably the easiest time of year to host a party – everyone is more laid back; most people take time off work; and the weather is perfect for an outdoor gathering. Although many think that summer entertaining is unavoidably expensive, that’s not necessarily the case. Here are some party ideas that won’t break the bank.
Let’s start with a simple décor. First, make the best use of all your furniture, both indoor and outdoor, to create an inviting outdoor space where people can easily come together and mingle. Create little nooks with cozy pouf style seats, complete with a side table, and use your indoor bar stools as tables to create a few gathering areas. Then, just hang some string lights to make the décor complete.
Next, instead of creating elaborate and expensive table spreads, just go casual. To create a lovely colorful table spread, buy seasonal blooms or pick some flowers in your own garden and do the arrangements yourself. Chop up a few summery fruits purchased in your local farmers market and arrange them on larger plates or trays.
Now let’s talk drinks. One of the more expensive aspects of any party is the alcohol. So, instead of busting your budget on buying a large selection of alcoholic drinks, pick a three or four of your favorite recipes and prepare pitcher drinks ahead of time. If you feel you need something extra, you can also serve inexpensive wines purchased at your local store.
Finally, instead of going all out and serving a full dinner, make plenty of appetizers and dips. Another inexpensive option is hot dogs. You can buy them in bulk, then chop up some toppings like unions, tomatoes and pickles and fill bowls with shredded cheese and mustard so your guests can put together their own hot dog versions.
